Prof. Margaret Harker-Farrand D.Hon Art HonFBIPP (1920-2013) Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Margaret Harker-Farrand D.Hon Art HonFBIPP on 16 February 2013 at the age of 93.

Margaret had been a member of the BIPP for 73 years, joining in 1939 and achieving her Associateship in 1941 and Fellowship in 1942 in Architectural Photography.

As one of the few female Presidents of the Institute, Margaret oversaw a number of notable events including the Annual Awards Dinner at the prestigious Park Lane Hotel in London, and hosting the first General Assembly of Europhot.

In her presidential address in 1965 Margaret commented that “one of the main stumbling blocks to full recognition is that photography is not yet a university subject” and by 1967 she had overseen the introduction of a BSc in Photographic Science, and later in 1972 a BA in Photographic Arts, at the Regent Street Polytechnic – now the University of Westminster. Margaret was subsequently awarded one of the first Professorships by the Polytechnic and came to hold the position of Dean.

Margaret was one of the leading photographic educators of our time and will be fondly remembered by the Institute. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.

Her funeral will take place at 11am on Monday 11 March at Egdean Church, West Sussex.
