BIPP Open Awards 2013
The
British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) is hereby inviting
professional photographers from across the world to enter the Open Awards 2013.
Unique
to this year’s Awards calendar, the Open Awards welcomes photographers outside
of the BIPP member-base; granting photography professionals the opportunity to
benchmark their work against that of their peers, while having its quality
judged against BIPP standards.
The categories for entry to the BIPP Open Awards are as
follows:
Weddings (WD)
Portraiture (PP)
Science &
Technology (S&T)
Commercial (Com)
Visual Arts (V A)
Moving Image
Non-commissioned
(NC)
The closing date for submissions is 30 September, 2013.
Presentations will then take place 20 November, 2013.
A winner will be selected from each category, all of
which will then be considered for the title of Winner, BIPP Open 2013. This is
an entirely separate and stand-alone competition from the rest of the BIPP
Awards.
The
BIPP Awards are amongst the most highly regarded in the industry, and success
in these awards shows an incredibly high standard of work. Not only are the
judges looking for composition and technical ability, but also creativity,
interpretation and that ‘wow factor’.
For
more information on the Awards, how to enter and the judging process, please
visit our dedicated Awards website at http://professionalphotographyawards.com/Open_Awards.html

Redeye at LOOK/13 Festival - Liverpool 16 –18 May 2013
Redeye, The Photography Network is excited to return to The Bluecoat and to be part of LOOK/13, one of the UK’s leading international photography festivals.
Redeye are programming a series of events at the
LOOK/13 opening weekend. All events are ticketed and need to be booked in
advance. For ticket prices and booking information please visit www.redeye.org.uk/redeye-programme.
Thursday 16 May: Focus on portfolios and two talks
The weekend commences with Portfolio, Critique and Advice
Sessions where you can book
in for half an hour with one or two of our experts to discuss business and
career issues or for advice on your portfolio, and a Portfolio Development Workshop with Alina Kisina.
Alina
Kisina is a Ukrainian photographer living in London, frequently returning to
her native land to continue an ongoing series of remarkably evocative pictures
that use a mixture of abstraction and representation that suggest a reality
beyond what is seen by the eye. This exclusive two-hour workshop has space for
a group of 4 photographers only.
These events are followed by The Perfect
Portfolio, a talk
by Redeye director Paul Herrmann. For many photographers their portfolio is the
key way to show their work to others, but it doesn't always go as well as it
could. This talk outlines the relatively simple ways you can improve your
portfolio and its presentation.
At
night Redeye will introduce two special guests to introduce the fifth National
Photography Symposium taking place the following day. One of these is
celebrated Liverpool-based landscape photographer John Davies who will talk about The
Landscape as Self-Portrait. The talk will be about photography and the
editing, selection and choices we make individually and collectively.
Friday
17 May: The National Photography Symposium
Now
and next in photography
The
fifth National Photography Symposium, the gathering place for ideas and
discussion about photography, presents an unmissable survey of the current
state of photography. Top experts, thinkers and commentators offer the most
interesting perspectives on what's happening now and next in the medium.
A
must for photographers who want to understand the forces behind UK photography;
to anyone working with photography, and to those studying and writing about
photography. It's an intelligent but non-academic event.
The
morning session explores developments in the culture, technology and
interpretation of photography. The afternoon looks at work, institutions and
funding.
Speakers
include amongst others:
Howard
Hopwood, Chairman
and New Business Director of Harman Technology (Ilford Photo), who looks at
science, manufacturing and technology in traditional products.
Alexandra
Moschovi, art
historian, critic, independent curator and Programme Leader of MA Photography
at Sunderland University will explore new technologies of image making (from
Google glasses, Photosynth and Klynt to geotagging and Instagram) and how these
affect everyday, popular uses of photography.
Dr
Raoul Eshelman, lecturer
in Slavic Literature at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich seeks
to identify and discuss photographs that are no longer postmodern -
visual images that impose upon us an experience of beauty and transcendence
whether we like it or not.
Susan
Jones, Director
of a-n The Artists Information Company will discuss the current climate and
future approaches for supporting visual arts practice and impacts on artists'
livelihoods.
Nick
Dunmur, commercial
and advertising photographer, a non-executive director of the AOP, and the
Chair of the British Photographic Council and Gwen Thomas, Legal &
Business Director of the Association of Photographers explore life as a working
photographer in 2013 and beyond, and the current challenges around the law and
business.
Immediately
after the last NPS5 session the launch of the LOOK/13 Photography Festival
takes place in The Bluecoat.
Saturday
18 May
Redeye at LOOK/13 continues on Saturday with Photography Activists Boot Camp.
This
nuts-and-bolts workshop is aimed at photographers who have an interest in
getting involved in the politics of photography, and are keen to do more to
campaign on a range of issues that affect photography - access, law, copyright,
dealing with authorities and protecting freedom of expression. It will outline
the various key issues and explore past and existing campaigns, including both
successful and less successful examples, to see what lessons can be learnt.
We
are grateful to the London Photographers' branch of the National Union of
Journalists for supporting this event.
And
we are delighted to welcome photographer Tom
Wood, 'Photie Man', for his first public talk in the city where he made the
majority of his work. This event is a very rare opportunity where he will show
a broad selection of work and answer questions. The event is followed by the
Liverpool launch and signing of his new book in two volumes, Men and Women.
All
events take place at The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX, United
Kingdom
For
tickets and further details see www.redeye.org.uk/redeye-programme.
Redeye is
grateful to the following organisations for support for the NPS, allowing the
lowest ever ticket price:
The Royal
Photographic Society
Harman technology
a-n The Artists Information Company
The Association of Photographers
The Bluecoat
Throughout
LOOK/13
During
LOOK/13 there will be exhibitions from participants in Redeye’s Lightbox 2, an
intensive professional development programme, which aims to launch the careers
of some of the UK’s most promising photographers.
