Picture Perfect Retirement Awaits Brian Saville LBIPP
Brian Saville LBIPP has announced that he is retiring from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service after 34 years.
Award-winning photographer Brian has captured some of the county’s largest fires on film over the years – from the Bradford City fire in 1985, Allied Colloids blaze in 1992, the Summit Tunnel fire in 1984, Hickson and Welch in 1992 and the string of firebomb attacks carried out by Mohammed Khalid of Keighley between 1995 and 1996.
Brian, from Bradford, joined West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) in 1978 as a technician and was promoted to head up the Visual Services department in 1985. Since then, he has completed a number of specialist photography and video courses, including a high profile secondment to the Home Office Forensic Science Laboratory, where he worked alongside Principal Scientific Officer Roger A Cooke. During his time with the Forensic Science Laboratory, he produced training materials which have been used nationally for fire investigation.
During his career, Brian has been awarded National Fire Service Photographer of the year, British Institute of Professional Photography regional winner three times, winner of the UNISON National Photography Awards, winner of the Child Poverty Action Group Award, Fire and Rescue Video Award, Fuji Times Off-Beat Photographer of the Year and a Konika Photography Award.
Brian has also been presented with a commendation from Bradford’s most senior judge, the Honorary Recorder of Bradford Stephen Gullick, for the part he played in Operation Wheel (the Bradford riots) in 2001. He also received a Chief Fire Officer’s Letter of Appreciation following his work at an incident in which eight people tragically died in a house fire in Birkby, Huddersfield.
During his time with WYFRS, Brian has also been responsible for the design and development of new equipment and technology, such as the Search and View Camera System (SAVCam), which enables firefighters to search in confined spaces. He has also designed a CCTV system for the new Incident Control Unit and been instrumental in developing the brigade’s Silent Witness cameras attached to all fire engines across West Yorkshire, which have been rolled out across the country.
Brian hopes to pursue his passion for documentary photography and video when he retires.
“I have flown in helicopters, driven a tank, met and worked with some talented people, including a few famous ones,” said Brian. “Every day has been a challenge and I have enjoyed every second of it.”

Fashion Turned Photographer in Business Finals
Copyright: www.mackney.com |
The award is for an individual who has been instrumental in the
success of a business. It will take into consideration the overall performance
of the business over the last three years, what the entrepreneur believes makes
them different and their vision for the future of the business.
Wendy’s background is in women’s fashion design
having over a decade in experience and working for well known brands like
Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, River Island, Pink Soda, Anna Sui, Next and
Chilli Pepper to name but a few and most recently George Davies (of Per Una,
George of Asda and founder of Next fame).
Having tired of the traveling and learnt from
the best about how to run a business (George Davies) Wendy decided to bring her
marketing, design and keen eye for fashion to Mackney photography focusing on
Makeovers and portraits whilst also lending her ideas to the commercial/
industrial side.
Looks can be deceiving (Wendy still gets asked for ID
down Sainsburys) but is extremely strategic and plans everything before putting
into action. Key skills are of course
being a people person and her previous experience in fashion of trend forecasting,
styling and a keen eye for creativity. Achievements
are managing to re-locate to Darley Abbey Mills for better presence and space.
Since winning the Local Business Accelerators
in conjunction with the Evening Telegraph in January 2012, Wendy has taken
Mackney Photography from strength to strength.
The duo have relocated to the stunning 2200sq ft purposely built
photography studio in Darley Abbey Mills.
They have since swept up awards in every category in a national
competition held by the BIPP (The
British Institute of Professional Photographers) and numerous other national
photographic competitions.
The winners will be announced at a fashionable
black tie awards ceremony at the Roundhouse on 28 September.

Urban Portraiture with Jason Light ABIPP - November
Join us on Tuesday 6 November for an Urban Portraiture with Jason Light ABIPP.

Places can be booked online at www.bipp.com/events or by calling Pam at Head Office on 01296 642020.
Copyright: Jason Light ABIPP |
Jason has a refreshing approach to urban portraiture which relies on using one light source, which could be anything from a single speedlight through a white umbrella or a grid spot, to using two speedlites through a large softbox. This method not only allows him to shoot quickly in terms of setting up, but gives him time to talk to and get to know his subjects. He always works on location using the minimum amount of equipment, and he shoots mainly everything in manual mode without using a light meter.
Jason will share his distinctive approach during this practical workshop which will take place on location in Maidstone. He will cover such aspects as getting the flash off camera and methods by which this can be achieved, and the use of umbrellas and a softbox to produce innovative and original images.
A practical afternoon (2pm-5pm) creating location portraiture in an urban setting.

Moving Image Course - 25 September - Special Offer to BIPP Members
Moving Image Course - 25 September 2012 - Special Offer To BIPP Members
With the web gaining ever more strength and cameras such as the
Canon 5D MkIII taking off, Direct Photographic has noticed an increasing demand from
photographers wishing to expand their knowledge when creating moving images on
shoots. Perhaps it’s a “behind the scenes” segment from a fashion shoot to go
up on a clients website, or a short cut from a portrait sitting, but whatever
the situation, video skills are becoming essential for the working
photographer.
In answer to this Direct Photographic has devised the Moving
Image Course, which is an intensive ‘hands-on’ one day lighting and camera
workshop taking place in their professional London studio and includes
Tungsten, HMI Fresnel, Par, Kino Flo and LED lighting equipment as well as all
the latest in video DSLR camera technology from Canon.
They are offering places on their next Moving Image
Course on 25 September 2012 to BIPP members with a 20% discount on a first-come,
first-served basis, as spaces are limited.
