North West Region - Andrew Brooks Evening

February’s members meeting was a treat for the North West Region who hosted an evening with local photographer Andrew Brooks, a master in the art of digital imagery.

His work is a crossover of ‘fantasy’ photography and digital art using techniques from both.
Despite the cold weather a large number of members turned out to hear Andrew describing how his complex and highly creative images are built up out of hundreds of layers and many, many hours of post production. He showed us various projects he had recently undertaken, some commissioned and some personal work destined to be decorative art and wallpaper. He has also recently exhibited his work.

Andrew illustrated using layering, how his unique pictures of futuristic fantasy scenes were composites of made up from bits of foliage, a textured wall, half a building, a jetty and an interesting sky all enhanced, stitched together and transformed into a remarkable final work of art.

As an ‘urban explorer’ he demonstrated how he sets up, lights, shoots and then puts together his derelict underground scenes, using multiple exposures each one individually lit and then blended during the time spent on post production.

Andrew’s work is highly creative, innovative and skilful and his motivation and enthusiasm for his work will have inspired all those who came along on a freezing night to hear him. A fascinating speaker and a great night for the region.

Mike Brookes-Roper FBIPP Wins Prestigious National Award

Congratulations to Mike Brookes-Roper FBIPP who has been announced the winner of the EEF Heroes of Modern UK Manufacturing Photography Competition.

The EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, is the representative voice of manufacturing in the UK. It has a growing membership of almost 6000 companies of all sizes, employing some 900,000 people from every sector of engineering, manufacturing, engineering construction and technology-based industries.

Mike's award winning image, which was judged National Winner, Best photograph by an professional photographer, captured the beauty of Scotland's booming renewable energy industry.

His winning image captures the base of a 150kW Tidal Turbine now in operation in the Moray Firth, Scotland. The judges said: "This powerful image of a contemporary industry is well composed and makes good use of lighting, producing a very striking photograph”.

The entrants business card or similar, must be reverse mounted on the print or placed in a sealed envelope (so the judge can’t see who it belongs to) and must be on the back of each print entered.

I have been a little under the weather this week with a very sore paw. Had to go to the horrible vet who put this big bandage on it and gave me an injection. To add insult to injury the vet has also put me on a diet which means no more treats! I am not having a good week.

Despite the traumatic weekend it was business as usual this week with a number of visitors to BIPP Head Office for Portfolio Reviews on Monday.

All the shortlisted entrants to the Professional Photography Awards have now been contacted – congratulations to you if you have been notified. The tickets are limited so please let the team know if you are going to the Awards Ceremony on 16 March.

Now we have more snow and slippery ice I plan to stay indoors with my poorly paw and get as much sympathy as possible.

James Stone ABIPP in Guatemala

In January 2012, Associate Member and documentary photographer James Stone travelled to Salama in Guatemala on a commission from international NGO Plan International. James visited 4 projects run by Plan during the shoot, spending time with rural communities and photographing the children that directly benefit from the work the NGO delivers.

The brief was to create a set of images that captures the essence of the work that Plan does in these rural communities, showing the children in education, the group work with teenagers and the engagement of Plan staff in the communities.

James explains: "I think the most poignant moment for me was when we asked this group of young woman “do you understand what happiness is?” and “have you ever felt joy”. These questions fell onto blank faces as they struggled to understand the question. The only response from one of the girls was “we are supposed to raise children and support our men”. This really hit home for me, and in fact when we asked them “have you ever seen your mother happy?”, the answer was no. This really goes to show what life is like for woman in these rural communities and highlights how important it is for NGO's like Plan to do the work they do. I for one have certainly had my eyes opened again, and I will be doing all I can to help."

James also explains that this is the first time he used Sony equipment out in the field after moving from Nikon upon his return from Cambodia a few months back. "this is the first time I have travelled light" James explains, "Guatemala is a very dangerous country, so having lots of gear with me was going to be a security risk, so I opted for the Sony a77 body, the 2.8 kit lens and a reflector". "being forced to use limited equipment makes you really have to use the environment to your benefit and examine the light and surroundings in detail. I really am very happy with the results."

Andrew Brooks creates stunning highly complex masterpieces of digital art, with imagery ranging from futuristic cities to pictorial mythical landscapes. All his images are composites, sometimes involving hundreds of images captured, and built up out of many layers of post production to create the final pictures. The images that emerge depict starkly beautiful urban scenes, empty but for the hollowed-out shells of buildings; cities suspended in the stars, imagined urban environments and serene pastoral scenes of the British countryside, seemingly real and at the same time untruthful in their vivid beauty.

Andrew will be talking to us about how he goes about creating these pictures and the ideas behind the shots. “The crucial element to my work is atmosphere…. No matter how much digital application is going on, the atmosphere and feel of a picture is always the most important thing.” quotes Andrew.

He will be showcasing a selection of his recent projects including his Secret Cities work and his New World Collection – a set of images all built of real life photographic images but then reconfigured to create fantasy scenes.

It has been an exceptionally cold week this week – not aided by the fact that half my fur was shaved off recently leaving me rather chilly!

On Tuesday a couple of the team visited the Midland Region for a portfolio assessment evening. This was a great opportunity for members and non-members to have their work looked at by BIPP Assessors with a view to going for a BIPP Qualification. Sometimes humans can be a miserable bunch, they don't like traffic jams and they don't like rain, which there seems to have been a lot of this week. Personally I like a snooze in the car in the morning, and running through muddy puddles is fun.

We had some visitors on Monday coming in for assessments, well done to all the successful candidates. There's also been lots of activity around the office this week with the Awards and I came across a lot of Long Service certificates, congratulations to those who receive them.

I had a terrible weekend last week due to the bath, I also had my hair cut which was very upsetting. This weekend I will be making sure it doesn't happen again!

Well I have certainly had a relaxing week, having spent three days at home snoozing and watching daytime TV! The same can’t be said however for the team at Head Office who have had an extremely busy week with the judging for the Professional Photography Awards taking place!

Apparently it was a very intense couple of days with a large number of images to go through. However thanks must go to the judges for their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the judging process. I am looking forward to seeing the winning images on 16 March.

In the meantime it’s the weekend again, I am a little apprehensive as I have heard the word ‘bath’ mentioned more than once this week...

The BIPP’s position on SOPA/PIPA

The controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) which are currently being debated in the US Senate, have been the cause of much speculation in the last 24 hours, in which we have seen several international websites go ‘dark’ in protest.

Whilst we support the concept of any endeavour to minimise online piracy and copyright infringement, especially where individual creators are affected, we believe that there is too much ambiguity in the SOPA proposals and that once again, the interests of the large ‘creative industries’ are being given priority over those of individual creators due to misinformation and a perceived need to support outdated business models. Conversely, some of the counter claims are over exaggerated and equally ill-informed. We therefore reserve judgement until such times as the bills are re-drafted.

Around 1000 images were received and the judging procress started yesterday morning and continues today.

Payback for visual artists

Last month a record 14,500 visual artists enjoyed a share of £4.4 million in Payback royalties through DACS.

Payback is an annual service provided by DACS, which distributes royalties to visual artists whose work has been reproduced in UK books and magazines, and on certain UK television channels.

A wide spectrum of visual artists benefited from Payback in 2011 including fine artists, photographers, illustrators, designers, cartoonists, applied artists and sculptors.

“More artists have claimed Payback than ever before.” says Nicolas Watkins-Wright, Payback Manager at DACS. “2011 was a tough year for visual artists financially and these royalties can go some way to helping artists sustain their practice in a difficult climate.”

Payback royalties come from revenue generated through UK collective licensing schemes including the photocopying of books and magazines by local government departments, universities and other businesses. Collective licensing is used in situations where it would be difficult or near impossible for visual artists to licence their rights on an individual basis, for example, when a business wishes to photocopy a page of a book which features their work.

Photographer and Payback claimant, Indré Serpytyte said: “It was a photographer friend of mine who recommended that I claim Payback. I didn’t believe her when she told me about it but then I checked it out for myself. I’ve claimed Payback for three years now. For me it is not just about the royalties but also the recognition.”

DACS’ Payback campaign runs from July to September each year; it is during this period that visual artists can submit their claim for a share of royalties. Each December DACS distributes Payback royalties to successful claimants just in time for Christmas.

The next Payback campaign will launch in July 2012. Visual artists who wish to claim Payback for the first time this year can register their details with DACS: payback@dacs.org.uk

I don’t know what is happening to me today! I woke up this morning, rolled over and fell off the bed, then I tripped down the stairs, had my tail trodden on and then when I finally arrived at the office the horrible window cleaners arrived! Next Friday 13th I am staying home!

The Towergate Fine Art Awards judging took place this week at the Towergate Offices in London. Paul Dyer FBIPP, Jo De Banzie FBIPP and Kevin Wilson FBIPP were the judges and the winners will be announced at the Professional Photography Awards on 16 March at the British Film Institute, London.

The entries to the Professional Photography awards have all been sorted in preparation for the judging next week – they are very strict that I am not allowed a sneaky peek!

Yorkshire Region Meeting and Talk from Steve Ramsden LBIPP

The first meeting of the year including a talk by multiple award winner & successful wedding photographer Steve Ramsden LBIPP will be taking place on Wednesday 18 January, 7.30pm at The Owl in Hambleton (details below).

Steve runs a successful wedding photography business, has won numerous BIPP and MPA awards, including last year's Yorkshire Region Classic Wedding and Overall Social Photographer of the Year titles, and is one of only two UK wedding photographers to have reached the Federation of European Photographers Silver Award standard.

He will take a look at the changes affecting the industry.

Steve spent 19 years with Lloyds TSB Bank before entering into what he describes as the crazy world of wedding photography just over 10 years ago. He will share with us the key points of his photographic journey and what he's learned along the way…so far.

He will go on to discuss the challenges facing us all in the future and how much we can predict what will happen next - the downward pressure on pricing, increased competition, erosion of copyright, ease of entry, how we all affect each other, and the ongoing need to remain profitable.

Steve will then open up a discussion to explore what we can do about it!!

Opportunity for Free Portfolio Review from BIPP

We will be holding a Midland Region Assessment Evening on Tuesday 31 January from 6.30pm-10pm at The Lea Marston Hotel in Sutton Coldfield.

Assessment Evenings provide working and professional photographers with an opportunity to meet BIPP members in their area and also spend half an hour with one of our Approved Assessors discussing ways in which to develop their work further or the process of going for BIPP qualification.

The half hour portfolio reviews are free of charge, but need to be booked in advance by contacting Rachel Madden-Jones at rachel@bipp.com or on 01296 642020.

If you’re unable to join us on 31 January, we will be holding similar events throughout the year, including portfolio reviews at Focus on Imaging at Birmingham NEC from 4-7 March, and details will be published on our website http://www.bipp.com/.

After a festive break everything seems to be back to normal at BIPP, the tree is gone and the lights are packed away until next year.

No such thing as a gentle start to the New Year for BIPP though! It has been a busy return as the latest issue of the Photographer has just been posted (will have to have a read through) and all the Awards entries have now been opened and sorted.

There are lots of preparations taking place for the judging of the National Awards this month and of course lots of planning for the Awards Presentations on 16 March at the British Film Institute, www.bipp.com/awards.

We also have more qualification assessments at the end of January – lots of post to go through (I still don’t like the postman)!

Portfolio Reviews at Focus on Imaging, NEC Birmingham

If you are not yet a BIPP Member you might like to take advantage of a Portfolio Review to gain an understanding of what you need to do to qualify and how long the process might take.

Portfolio Reviews offer professional photographers the opportunity to receive face-to-face advice on their work from of BIPP’s Approved Assessors. Our Assessors fully understand the requirements for qualification and are highly experienced photographers with a wealth of industry knowledge.

We strongly recommend candidates seek guidance on preparing for qualification assessments at a portfolio review before booking a date.

We will be providing 45 minute Portfolio Reviews at Focus on Imaging at the NEC Birmingham from 4 - 7 March.

The next BIPP Assessment Days will be taking place on 20 and 21 February 2012 at Head Office.
If you would like to submit an entry for Assessment, the closing dates are 9 and 10 January 2012. By the closing date, we will need:

Completed Membership Application Form (if you are not already a Member)
Completed Qualified Submission Form
Submission Fee (if not already paid online)
3 copies of your supporting evidence
Copies of professional insurance
Your disc of 20 images

The fee for Assessment Days is £50 + VAT (£60). We regret we cannot confirm your Assessment until the above has been received. No refund is given in the event that you change or cancel your Assessment.

Award-winning photographer Jaine Briscoe Price, long established as one of the region’s top boudoir and makeover photographers, guides us through the art of styling, lighting and posing clients as ‘boudoir babes’!

Jaine runs a successful studio in Chester and is now specialising in the emerging market of makeover and boudoir photography in answer to the demands of clients over the past few years. She will demonstrate in the seminar how to get inexperienced and often unwilling clients to relax and perform in front of the camera, and to step into a model’s stilettos bringing out a hidden or new side to their personalities. She will show how the right make up, hairstyling, clothing and accessories can produce stunning effects on the most fresh faced of girls. Jaine also demonstrates how some of the best images can be created using natural and available lighting making this kind of work accessible for those photographers without a studio.

BIPP Member owns 'Rarer than Rare' David Bowie footage

Congratulations to Long serving Member and former President, John Henshall FBIPP.

John made the headlines today for discovering he is the owner of 'rarer than rare' footage of David Bowie performing 'The Jean Genie' in 1973 on Top of the Pops, which was thought to be lost by the BBC.

The footage will be aired on the Top of the Pops Christmas Special on BBC2 tonight between 7.30 - 9.00pm.

Well it's been busy this week, the postman driving me crazy with loads of parcels arriving - apparently they are prints for some award or other (http://www.bipp.com/Default.aspx?tabid=589). Don't know why they won't let me help open them but at least I get to bark at the postman, that's always fun.

There's also been some rushing around getting stuff ready for the next issue of the magazine - I don't understand what all the fuss is about, it won't be out until after Christmas.

I'm annoyed they won't let me join Facebook though - apparently lots of people were talking about me this week. I'm a star!!

We would like to thank all our Members who took the time to fill in our website survey. We received lots of helpful feedback and comments. We will be reviewing all the feedback and improving our website early in the New Year.

Some stats from results from Members...

We were pleased to see that overall most of those who responded were satisfied or very satisfied with the website.

We were also pleased to see that most respondents found what they were looking for too.

However, respondents haven't found much reason to make repeat visits. This is something we will be working on.

News of any updates and improvements to the website will be publicised here, in our Facebook group and on Twitter.

FEP Fine Art Photograph of the Year 2011

The aim of the FEP Fine Art Photograph of the Year competition is to reward and stimulate creative initiatives by professional photographers, often bound to assignment work.

The competition is entirely web-based; the sign-up, hosting and judging will all be carried out online at http://competition.europeanphotographers.eu/competition.asp?compo_id=22. There are no sub-categories, and each entrant may submit up to three images.

The entry fee is 10.00 Euro for each picture submitted for BIPP Members (20.00 Euros for non-members).
QEP and Master QEPs may enter one picture free of charge. Should they wish to enter further images, the cost will be 10.00 Euro.
Pictures will be judged by an international jury of at least 5 experts nominated by the FEP.The winning images will be placed on the FEP website and may travel as an exhibition.
The winners will be awarded at a special ceremony in 2012 (date and venue to be communicated later in the year)

"Had to stay upstairs again"

Everyone has been running around a lot this week, there were Qualification Assessments on Monday and Tuesday (I had to stay upstairs again).

Congratulations to everyone who gained their BIPP qualification!

On Wednesday a few of the humans went out to London for the South East Region Awards Presentation. The event took place on board the Tattershall Castle on the Thames! Check out the winning images at http://www.bipp.com/Default.aspx?tabid=875

Boxes have appeared under the tree wrapped in paper and now we have another tree indoors at home! I thought maybe this was to save me having to go in the garden when it is so cold – but apparently this is not what the trees are for! Nor are the boxes for playing with……

Towergate Fine Art Competition

Now in its ninth consecutive year, the Towergate Camerasure Fine Art Competition is now open for entries.

This competition is exclusive to BIPP Members (including Student Members) and is being sponsored by leading camera insurance specialist Towergate Camerasure.

The competition carries prizes of:

£1000, £700 and £400 for the top three places
£300 for the international winner
£300 for the student winner

Also, the top 30 images will form part of a travelling exhibition being displayed at Towergate offices, promoting the involvement of Towergate Underwriting in professional imaging.

Entry is free, with a limit of five entries, and the subject matter can be anything that falls under the category of Fine Art.

The presentation of the Awards will run alongside the BIPP Professional Photography Awards at the British Film Institute in London on Friday 16 March 2012.

The closing date for entries is 16 December 2011.

George's Friday Summary

A large tree has appeared in the BIPP offices this week – I am a little confused by this as I am constantly told ‘NO’ when I go near it! It has sparkly lights and dangly things which all look very inviting to play with – I will have to go and have another investigate when no one is looking…..

We had a lot of visitors on Thursday for Portfolio Assessments when photographers came in with their images to be looked at by a BIPP Assessor. These can be tough days for me as I have to stay upstairs and try and be quiet when I want to be downstairs to greet everyone! Apparently barking and jumping at humans is not the correct way to say Hello – but I disagree!

Feeling festive

We’re feeling very festive at Head Office today, and we’ve put up our Christmas tree!

We’ve also sent out the December e-newsletters to all our Members and Friends, if you haven’t received your copy please add a comment, with your details, to the blog and we’ll add you to the mailing list.

With the beginning of the festivities, we’re starting to think about food, which leads neatly to our next item… The Pink Lady Food Photography Competition! The competition is now open with a prize of £5000 for the overall winner, plus the opportunity to be judged by a highly distinguished panel of experts, including the BIPP President, Roy Meiklejon. Introducing George

Hi, my name is George, and I am 4 and ¾. I am a Labradoodle (my Mummy is a Labrador and my Dad was a Giant Poodle)!

I come to work at the BIPP Head Office most days and have become an integral part of the team – my main responsibility is shredding of paper for recycling! Sometimes I do get told off for shredding the wrong things but I do my best!

My favourite foods are sausages and cheese but I’m currently on a diet so not too many of those around at the moment! I do manage to find the odd apple core, yoghurt pot and crisp packet from the bins when no-one is looking!

I will be posting (with a little help) a weekly Friday round-up of news and events at the BIPP from the Canine perspective!
